Stranded in Utah! This morning I had time to go to Temple Square, the full city block of the Mormon Temple, Tabernacle, the Assembly, the museum. The Temple is the large ominous building (where only Mormons are allowed), and the Tabernacle is the dome shaped building (where we celebrated Utah Night at General Convention). I walked to Brigham Young's home and had a tour by two young women missionaries, one from France and one from Idaho. There were lots of these young people fulfilling their two-year mission commitment in Temple Square. Off to the airport to discover that my flight was delayed such that my connection through Chicago would not work--bad weather in Hartford. So I took the trolley back to the Radisson to stay another night. After dinner I went for a walk in a direction I had not explored toward the Union Pacific Railroad building. Inside was the beauty and wonder of elegant stained glass windows and murals depicting the Mormon pilgrimage story. On the other side of the building was The Gateway--a courtyard of stores with a large sprinkler play area for children who were chasing the water that shot up into the air sporadically. Along the way were sculptures commemorating the 2002 Winter Olympics. On the way back to the hotel brought conversations with several homeless people (there are many here). Another sculpture caught my eye--a large stone out of which 3 glass prisms emerge, each with petroglyphic images related to the Ute Native Americans. If you look closely you'll see a hobbled horse, etched hands, a bear dance, birds. It was beautiful. A couple joined me in marveling at the sculpture. Had I not been stranded in Utah, I would have missed my exciting walk…
Peace,
